All great leaders since the beginning of civilization have talked about self-awareness and its importance as a major variable to create a life of joy and fulfillment. Ancient Greek philosophers starting with Pythagoras of Samos, Socrates and Plato. In ancient Greek ”Gnothi se auton” means to know yourself. Leaders today like Oprah Winfrey, Tony Robbins, and Gary Vaynerchuk are all stressing the concept of self-awareness but only a few of us have actually contemplated on this.
Essentially we all have a bright side and a dark side. The bright side includes all our strengths and talents, therefore things that we are proud of ourselves. The dark side is our weaknesses and all the things we are less proud of about ourselves.
Now as I am a very positive person for a long long time I made the mistake of focusing on my strengths and I wasn’t interested in my weaknesses. I didn’t want to examine them of talking about them. The problem with that approach is that I essentially didn’t accept a part of me by having this strategy, I denied a part of me because I didn’t have the courage to accept them. Until a big event happened in my life, a negative event and all of my weaknesses that I was running away from they came to the surface and I had no choice other than to face them, accept them, embrace them and own them. Because of as much as I own my strengths, my weaknesses are equally mine and they all make me unique and whole.
Now the question is how do we get to the position of accepting ourselves fully and own our strengths as much as our weaknesses? When I work with people on 121 sessions I always teach the importance of studying our personal philosophy and belief system. The future always unfolds our belief system, therefore the best way for us to foresee the future is by studying our personal philosophy to see whether we are heading towards the direction of our dreams.
For example, someone that wants to get rich and wealthy and does all the right things works hard etc. If his belief is that all rich and wealthy people are evil and manipulative there will be a limiting belief and contradictions between what he is striving for and his belief system. In this case, there are two options, he either has to become an evil and manipulative person to get rich and wealthy or he will never achieve his goal.
Do you see what I mean by that? Therefore we need to study our personal philosophy for each and every aspect of our lives. Think about it, if you have an area in your life that suffers today, more often than not is due to the fact that your belief system is a barrier towards what you are looking to achieve.
For example, if the money area in your life suffers is due to your belief system about money. Now think about how those beliefs were formed and where did they come from. Very often we learn about money management from our parents, although if your parents they aren’t so good money management themselves maybe you need to rethink and redefine your relationship your money. Get around people that have mastered that field and create a new philosophy about money that will serve you better to achieve your dreams.
To summarize, make sure you identify both your strengths and weaknesses. Capitalize on your strengths and go all in and try to find people that compliment your weaknesses to work with. Then sit down and examine your personal philosophy in every aspect of your life to see whether you are heading towards your dreams. If now replace your old beliefs with new ones that serve you better.
